Adult Hospitalist Quality and Safety Director
Albany Medical College, part of the Albany Med Health System, is seeking an Adult Hospitalist Quality and Safety Director to join the Division of Hospitalist Medicine at Albany Medical Center. In this role, you would work .75 FTE clinically as a Hospitalist with .25 FTE dedicated to the leadership role.
This physician leadership position provides dedicated oversight and leadership for quality improvement and patient safety across the adult hospitalist service. The Director will partner with hospitalist leadership and multidisciplinary teams to advance a culture of safety, clinical excellence, continuous learning, and systems-based improvement.
Hospitalist responsibilities include:
- Admissions, consults and daily rounding on inpatients
- Supervision and teaching of medical residents with patients
- Supervision of advanced practiced providers on non-teaching patients
Quality and Safety Director responsibilities include:
- Lead the Hospitalist Quality and Safety Committee and establish annual quality and safety goals.
- Review Safety Intelligence reports, adverse events, quality concerns, and opportunities for systems improvement.
- Oversee hospitalist Morbidity and Mortality conferences, including case selection, review, education, and follow-up of action items.
- Support review of quality flags, Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs), Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs), and Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs).
- Represent Hospitalist Medicine at institutional quality and safety meetings and communicate relevant priorities back to the division.
- Develop and support focused quality improvement workgroups in areas such as readmissions, mortality, sepsis, medication safety, transitions of care, diagnostic safety, patient experience, and clinical communication.
- Provide quality and safety education to hospitalist physicians, APPs, residents, and interdisciplinary partners.
- Partner with Quality, Nursing, Pharmacy, Case Management, Infection Prevention, CDI, Risk Management, and other institutional stakeholders to improve care processes and patient outcomes.
- Support development and monitoring of hospitalist quality and safety metrics, dashboards, and improvement initiatives.
Qualifications include:
- MD/DO or equivalent degree.
- Board certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
- Active medical staff appointment at Albany Medical Center.
- Active and unrestricted medical licensure or eligibility for licensure in New York State.
- Current or prior clinical practice as an adult hospitalist.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and systems-based practice.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and physician leadership skills.
- Familiarity with quality metrics, patient safety reporting, M&M review, and hospital performance improvement.
- Experience with quality improvement methodology is preferred.
Position structure:
This position includes 0.25 FTE of dedicated physician leadership time to support quality and safety activities, including case review, committee leadership, institutional meeting participation, education, workgroup oversight, and quality-goal development.
The Director will report to the Medical Director for Hospital Affairs and work closely with Hospitalist Medicine leadership and Albany Medical Center's Quality, Risk Management, Infection Prevention, Pharmacy, Nursing, Case Management, and Clinical Documentation Improvement teams.
